JAECOO is preparing to broaden its presence in Southern Africa’s fast-evolving hybrid market with the upcoming arrival of the JAECOO J5 HEV, expected to reach local showrooms in 2026. The compact SUV was recently showcased at the OMODA & JAECOO International User Summit in Wuhu, China, and signals the brand’s next big stride toward new-energy mobility. The J5 HEV introduces JAECOO’s latest SHS hybrid drive system, a setup designed to deliver both strong efficiency and everyday practicality. The result is a powertrain that blends the smooth, quiet feel of electric driving with the range confidence of petrol. According to factory figures, the J5 HEV is capable of sprinting from 0–100 km/h in 7.9 seconds, reaching a top speed of 175 km/h, and covering over 1,000 km on a full tank. Fuel use is claimed at 5.3L/100 km, with CO₂ emissions rated at 118.9 g/km—numbers that position it as a compelling option for cost-conscious commuters and long-distance travellers alike. The system automatically adapts its energy flow depending on the conditions—leaning on electric power during relaxed driving and integrating the petrol engine when more performance is needed. Drivers can also toggle between Eco and Sport modes to match mood and road. Inside, the J5 HEV leans into the premium comfort direction JAECOO has been steadily cultivating. Noise-reducing acoustic glass, active sound control and improved insulation aim to deliver a quieter cabin, while a 13.2-inch central touchscreen and a column-mounted gear selector shape a minimalist, driver-focused cockpit layout. On the safety front, the SUV is equipped with a full suite of driver assistance technology—20 ADAS features are included—alongside multiple layers of battery protection hardware and monitoring systems. Speaking on the upcoming launch, Shannon Gahagan, National Brand and Marketing Manager for OMODA & JAECOO South Africa, says the J5 HEV will play a key role in widening access to electrified mobility locally. “We’ve already seen strong interest in the J7 SHS and OMODA C9 SHS plug-in hybrids. The arrival of the J5 HEV strengthens our commitment to offering efficient, smooth and attainable hybrid solutions for South African motorists.” With the hybrid market heating up and consumer interest steadily shifting, the J5 HEV looks set to become JAECOO’s volume-driven contender—aimed directly at the growing group of buyers seeking efficiency and refinement without stepping fully into the EV space.
